On Their Way
ON THEIR WAY
That which is cannot be true.
—Herbert Marcuse
I was in my body for a few minutes
yesterday the wind was blowing
the TV was on except the words came out
sideways working their way toward the window
longing to breathe free unfamiliar as they were
with truth as I herded them along
as I usually do when one of them stopped
and begged me for directions I told it
that we live in the greatest country
this country has ever known and wasn’t that
a great fill-in-the-blank last night
how at last someone was standing up
against whatever it is that the real problem is
and can’t somebody do something about
those people do I have to be specific
and anyway the rumor is that everything
is real so I sent the word on its way
with its friends in hopes they would find
a better better and a greater greater
